/ About the project
Originally built nearly two centuries ago, this historic Victorian home in Redwood City stood as a symbol of the city’s architectural roots—rich in character, but in need of structural and functional transformation. VRchitects took on the challenge to preserve its beauty while unlocking new life beneath it.
Our team executed a full historic restoration, including lifting the original structure to construct an entirely new lower-level foundation, transforming the single-family home into three modern residences without compromising its legacy.
Design + Structural Innovation
Preserving Heritage
The home’s ornate cornices, bay windows, and iconic entry detailing were carefully restored and repainted in a soft Victorian blue, honoring the historical style while refreshing its curb appeal. Original materials were either restored or meticulously replicated to preserve authenticity.
Lifting the Structure
One of the most technically ambitious parts of the project involved lifting the entire original frame to create a new basement level, now converted into a livable unit. This addition nearly doubled the usable square footage without altering the exterior charm.
Converted into Three Legal Units
The home now functions as a triplex, with a dedicated entry for each unit. Each living space has been reimagined with clean, modern interiors—high ceilings, sleek kitchens, and minimalist finishes—all designed for flexibility, comfort, and modern rental standards.
Interior Design Approach
Bright + Minimalist Aesthetic
Each unit was designed to feel open and elevated. Light wood floors, crisp white walls, and subtle millwork nod to the building’s age while keeping the interiors versatile and fresh.
Efficient Kitchens + Baths
Custom cabinetry, quartz countertops, and clean tile work ground the kitchens and bathrooms in functionality without losing design elegance.
From Landmark to Livable
This project is a rare example of how preservation and innovation can coexist. By breathing new life into a structure that’s stood for generations, we didn’t just renovate a home—we extended its legacy.
